Native Salmon Henry Robertson design
The salmon fish never ceases to wonder and amaze. As well as its life sustaining merits, the
salmon is also plentiful in westcoast native art.
With the salmon's special agility, it displays its strength and beauty as it battles the mighty
currents by swimming the river upstream to reach its spawning area. Not all the fish will reach
the spawning area - many will fall behind and die from sheer exhaustion - but those that do, do with
gusto and magnificence.
The salmon is one of Canada's finest and most highly regarded fish.
Henry Robertson
"Though almost 67, Henry Robertson still bears a small decades-old scar on the palm of his hand, a legacy of the time a residential school supervisor bent on putting an end to his native carving hobby drove a pencil into it.
It didn't work - Robertson never stopped. Today, instead of being punished for his artistry, he's celebrated for it."
The Vancouver Courier. May 13, 2002.
As a member of the Kenano Kitlope and Haisla band, Henry's works have been and continue to be, displayed all over the world.
The salmon trivet is wonderful and special as a gift too.
