The Haida Salmon in Copper
The meaning of Copper
Among the Northwest Coast First Nations, the ultimate symbol of wealth, power and
prestige was (and still is) the Copper: a keystone-shaped shield made of beaten copper sheets and decorated
with a crest design. They were rare, had names and their symbolic as well as their material values were very
high. Its color, like that of the salmon fish, connotes wealth.
The salmon has been honored and protected by the First Nations peoples of the Northwest traditionally.
By drawing upon all the traditional elements of Haida art and his own imagery, and in creating this magnificent and
unique design, Bill Reid speaks for all nations with his respect and honor for this life nourishing fish.
This is a framed reproduction with bronze-colored matting in an aluminum style frame of the famous Haida Salmon 'SKAAGI' drawings made in copper layered plate. Approximate measurements: W8½" x H5½"
(Framed W11" H8½).
