The Lord Of The Ocean Over Split Raven
The Killer Whale is the "Lord of the Ocean" and generally symbolizes long life. He is the traveller and guardian of the seas and is a symbol of good luck.
He represents strength and bravery. It was a a common belief that should a fisherman drown, his spirit
would return in the guise of a whale.
Here we see the whale over the raven - who is wellknown for being a trickster, albeit a wise and
charming one! The two compliment each other well: The raven is light, a mischevious trouble-maker at the
best of times with his charming trickery! and the goodly, lucky whale who tempers with strength
and equilibrium.
The sculpture is a licensed reproduction of an original Haida argillite carving from the Canadian Museum
of Civilization contemporary collection by artist Ed Russ (1953-). The sculpture is made of
a composite that simulates the look and feel of argillite. Argillite is a gray-black slate
found only on Haida Gwaii (Queen Charlotte Islands). The sculpture height
is approximately 5" tall.
Bring a little westcoast spirit into your home! These make special gifts too.
